For centuries, Nin Salt’s work gives life. It has nurtured for many generations. It has given many plants and animals a home. Love for the salt has transferred from generation to generation. Even the Roman emperors at their feasts enjoyed the salt’s abundance of flavors. Roman gate, still located at the salt pans, testify of the age of our salt pan. At those ancient times, salt was exchanged for gold, ounce for ounce, and it is well known that Roman soldiers were paid with our salt. A Roman term for this kind of payment was salarium – it is believed that the term „salary“ originates from that.

In 1500, Venetians bought salt pans on the Adriatic sea, including our Nin Saltworks. Since it was a rival to their salt pans, they shut it down for 500 years. They could not shut down life. Nin Saltworks was still alive and biodynamic ecosystem. Even today, it still lives and produces in the same way. Located at the shallow lagoon of the Nin bay, it covers an area of 55 hectares. In the wider area, there is no industry or extensive agriculture, and the area of Nin Saltworks Nin is located between five Croatian national parks (Plitvice, Paklenica, Northern Velebit and Krka), which further testifies of the purity and an unspoiled natural environment.

Sea Organ is situated on the western end of Zadar´s Riva, and can be observed as a differently shaped part of the coast which consists of several stairs that descend into the sea.
The organ looks like a series of broad steps leading down into the water, but there´s actually very clever engineering hiding under the surface. The lower steps allow water and air to flow in. That water and air is then funneled into resonant chambers under the steps, and pushed out through the channels on the upper stairs, seen here. These cause the undulating, chime-like notes to be produced. Because the sea is always shifting and changing, the sea organ never sounds exactly the same twice. Each sound you hear is completely unique.

The stairs extend for about 70 meters along the coast, under them, at the lowest sea-tide level, 35 pipes of different length, diameter and tilts were built in vertically to the coast and they raise aslant until the paved part of the shore and end in a canal (a service corridor). On the pipes, there are LABIUMS (whistles), which play 7 chords of 5 tones. Above the canal there are perforated stone stairs through which the sound comes out, the air pushed by the sea.

This site is a blend of human ideas and skills and the energy of the sea, waves, tide and flood, a place for relaxation, contemplation and conversation while listening to an endless concert of mystic harmonies of the “Orchestra of Nature”.

Sea Organ is constructed according to the project made by architect Nikola Bašić with the help of several experts: Professor Vladimir Andročec was the sea hydraulics consultant from the Zagreb Civil Engineering University, the pipes were made by Goran Ježina from Murter, a well-known organ art workshop – Heferer from Zagreb made 35 labiums for every pipe, and it was tuned by professor Ivica Stamać from Zagreb.

In 2006 Croatian architect Nikola Bašić received the European Prize for Urban Public Space in Barcelona for his Zadar Sea Organ project, as the best among 207 candidate projects from across Europe.

Traveling along the Adriatic coast towards the northern Dalmatia, between two historical cities of Zadar and Šibenik, you will come across a natural phenomenon – the two equally beautiful and yet so very different shades of blue. On one side you will see the well indented Adriatic coast, famous for its alluring beauty and clear sea, and on the other side, you will see the largest natural lake in Croatia.

Because of its rare natural habitats, freshwater springs and biodiversity, Vransko Lake and its surroundings have been declared a Nature Park on July 21st, 1999. The Park limits are between Pirovac and Pakoštane. It stretches across 57 km², 30,02km² of that being the lake area itself, which stretches in direction north-west to the south-east, parallel with the sea coast, from which it is, in some places, less than a kilometer apart. The lake is unique because of its position and characteristics, not only in Croatia but in other parts of Europe too. It is, in fact, a karst valley filled with brackish water as well as crypto depression, which means that a portion of the lake lies below sea level.

The dominating characteristic of the park is its special Ornithological reserve, which received its title in 1983 because of its well preserved huge reed-patch in the north-western part of the lake as well for its immense biodiversity, and extraordinary scientific and ecological value. The reserve has been included in the list of Important Bird Areas in Europe and became the Ramsar site in 2013.

It is an unusual compromise and link between land and water which offers a refuge to numerous species of plants and animals, offering them all that is necessary for life. Overgrown with grass, sedge, rush and reed, it looks like a field with shallow ponds scattered all over it. Covered with permanent flowers of vibrant colors it offers a home to many butterflies, dragonflies and other different insects that enable the birds to stay in the reserve and the Park throughout the year. Hidden in the reed, bird lovers can experience watching the birds nesting and taking care of their chicks. Vransko Lake is a hot-spot with a tremendous diversity of ornithofauna with 256 recorded bird species, of which 102 nests in the park area. Four bird species that nest here are considered endangered on the European level and seven on a national level. For some of these birds, Vransko Lake is the only nesting area in the entire Mediterranean part of Croatia. The park area is also an important resting and feeding place for a whole range of endangered European species. More than 100 000 waterbirds come here to spend the winter.

On February 2nd, 2013, by fulfilling 6 out of 9 conditions of this oldest international convention signed exclusively for ecosystem protection, Nature Park Vransko Lake entered the world important wet areas list as the largest natural, permanent, brackish body of water in Croatia that has exceptional importance for many endangered and rare bird species in Europe.
Along with the Neretva river delta, Vransko Lake is the largest wetland area of the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, representing the center of biodiversity of the wider area in the region. It has international importance due to its specific geographical and climatic position which supports important and rare habitats, marshes, flooded meadows and vast reed beds, as well as the largest area of open water, an important habitat where birds overwinter.

Fish are also an important part of the lake. This area still offers an opportunity for numerous future researches that will discover many other special features of the lake.

The climate in this area is typically the Mediterranean. Water sources, pine forest and camp “Crkvine” offer protection and refreshment in every situation. Birdwatchers can spend their quality time here and relax, while fishermen can catch fish on the lake and its shores during the almost entire year. Cyclists and hikers can experience our amazing 40 km long bike trail around the lake. The trail passes observation points and goes through areas with a magnificent combinations of colors and irresistible aromatic scents of wild plants, especially the intoxicating fragrance of sage. One part of the trail provides a refuge in the shade of pine forest just next to the lake.
In the old days, Vransko Lake was known as „Vedro blato“. Its cultural and historical monuments date from as far back as 2000 years B.C. Vransko Lake Nature Park still hides many secrets and is a constant source of scientific discoveries which the park is trying to explore and present to the world, with the help of experts dealing with different fields of research. There are few areas in the world where you can simultaneously explore three very different environments and landscapes: the sea coast and the rich archipelago behind it, the Mediterranean swamp with its unique landscape and ecosystem, and just behind the hill, the rural idyll of the villages in Ravni kotari.
When you visit us, you will be far away from civilization and yet so near. Come and enjoy the world of nature in our park with genuine curiosity and joy, and you will find peace and satisfaction which comes from becoming one with nature.

Park’s Uniqueness

The largest lake in Croatia

Apart from the lower part of river Neretva, it is the only large swamp in the Mediterranean part of Croatia

Special Ornithological Reserve

Habitat for four bird species endangered on the European level

Habitat for seven bird species endangered on the national level

The biggest nesting population of the Pygmy Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmeus) in Croatia

Only nesting area in the Mediterranean part of Croatia for Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea), Great White Egret (Egretta alba), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta), and Pygmy Cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmeus)

Habitat for species included in the Bonn Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals

Hot-spot area – diversity of ornithofauna (256 species, 102 nesting species)

Number of waterbirds spending the winter on the lake exceeds 100,000 individuals

Rich history (first findings date from 2000 years BC).

DRAŽICA BEACH

The water side attraction is one that guarantees all-day fun for the children, and you can find it at Dražica Beach. This pebbly beach is one of a number of lovely beaches which can be found on the southeastern side of the town. Encircled by thick pine trees, you can count on plenty shade and cool air which along with the many attractions, seems ideal for a family with children. A diving club enables visitors to learn how to explore the sea floor. Exceptionally well-organized, the cleanliness and quality of this beach has been confirmed by a blue flag which has been proudly waving over Dražica since 2006.

SOLINE BEACH

If you are in search of the most beautiful coves, you will be overjoyed with Soline beach. One of the most beautiful in town, it is charmingly located in a patch of forestation, right beside a campground called Park Soline. It is very convenient for a family with small children because you will find both sand and pebble beaches, each encased by a special, fenced off area zoned just for swimmers. If you are hungry, don’t worry – there are coffee shops, restaurants and fast food joints to appease your appetite at the beach. If you don’t like to bake too long in the sun, try out some – or better yet, all – of the activities that Biograd has to offer – paddle boats, kayaking, and aqua park… Beach volleyball enthusiasts have a court for enjoying their favorite sport.

BOŠANA BEACH

If you are heading towards the north-western part of town, we recommend the seaside walkway, just beyond the new marina, where you’ll easily reach Bošana Beach. The outstretched, pebbly beach which has an easy, direct entrance to the sea will agree with all generations. For time spent between swimming, enjoy our volleyball court on the sand, and your young ones will certainly be delighted with the children’s playground. You’ll find food and drink in the coffee shops, restaurants and stands selling fast food which are in direct proximity of the beach. One warning – as this beach has no forest or shady area, please wear sunscreen and ensure that you are adequately protected from excessive exposure to the sun!

CRVENA LUKA BEACH

Boating to the beach? If you happen to find yourself on the Biograd beaches of Soline or Dražica in a rented boat, there’s one more beautiful sandy cove by the name of Crvena Luka (red sunset). Only about three kilometers from the center of Biograd, it’s particularly ideal for hot summer days, as it is surrounded with the cool shade of pine trees. If you are more suited to walking, head out on foot from the Kumenat settlement or, perhaps fastest of all, you can reach Crvena Luka by automobile.
